How we measured it

Sample
480 analysed TikTok Videos from 10 Research Runs
Dates

Platforms

Runs
10
  • Each Run was one Research Run on the ShortsIntel house account, up to 50 Videos per Run, one niche brief each. The 10 Runs behind the tables are skincare, supplements, DTC fashion, fintech apps, food and beverage, pet products, home goods, mobile games, beauty UGC and coffee. Those 10 Runs cost 10,360 Credits.
  • All 10 Runs were captured on 1 November 2026. The dates above are when the Videos were posted: 383 of the 480 went up in the 30 days before capture.
  • Research picks Videos that are doing well for the brief. This is a sample of what is working in each niche, not a random sample of TikTok.
  • Views lift is a Video's views divided by the median views of its own Run. 2x means twice the typical Video in the same niche. Comparing inside each Run stops niches with big audiences from swamping small ones.
  • Engagement rate is likes, comments, shares and saves divided by views.
  • Hook type and opening line come from the Video analysis. For 232 of the 480 Videos it had the speech, for 208 only the caption and on-screen text, and for 40 only the picture.
  • We ran 2 more Runs that returned no TikTok Videos: fitness (46 Instagram Videos) and B2B SaaS (49 YouTube Videos). With 6 Instagram Videos from the DTC fashion Run, that is 101 Videos left out of every table, too few and too narrow to benchmark.

TikTok Opening Line Length and Views

343 TikTok Videos with a spoken or written opening line. Lines of 11 to 15 words did best, but every band holds a wide spread, so treat length as a weak signal.

What Else the Opening Seconds Show

1.60x

median views lift for opening lines that say "you" or "your" (89 Videos).

58.5%

of TikTok Videos show the creator on camera (281 of 480).

55.2%

carry on-screen captions (265 of 480). Their median views lift is 1.08x against 0.96x without, too close to call.

208 of 480

TikTok hooks were read from the caption and on-screen text only, because the Video had no speech to work from.

For those Videos the opening line is the first text a viewer reads, not words spoken. Leaving them out moves the ranking little: problem hooks drop to 1.40x and curiosity gaps rise to 1.62x, and both stay above the median. The sample is also Research's pick of what performs in each niche, so a 1.0x Video here is already a good one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which TikTok hooks get the most views?
In 480 TikTok Videos from 10 ShortsIntel Research Runs, captured on 1 November 2026, problem hooks had the highest median views of the common hook types at 1.97x the median Video in the same niche, followed by curiosity gaps at 1.48x. Videos with no hook did worst, at 0.40x.
What is the most common hook on TikTok?
A demonstration: showing the product or the result straight away. It opened 137 of the 480 TikTok Videos we analysed (28.5%), and it was the most common hook in 5 of 10 niches. Its median views lift was 0.85x, below the typical Video in its niche.
How long should a TikTok hook be?
The median opening line in our sample was 10 words, and half ran between 7 and 17 words. Lines of 11 to 15 words had the best median views lift at 1.38x (55 Videos), while lines of 5 words or fewer had 0.74x (59 Videos). The spread inside each band is wide, so treat length as a weak signal.
What does views lift mean?
A Video's views divided by the median views of the Research Run it came from. Each Run covers one niche, so 2x means twice the views of the typical Video in that niche. It lets a pet product Video and a fintech Video be compared fairly.
Does this apply to Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts?
We cannot say from this data. The Runs returned 52 Instagram Videos from 2 Runs, mostly fitness, and 49 YouTube Videos from 1 Run, all B2B SaaS. That is too few and too narrow to benchmark hooks, so every figure on this page is TikTok only.
How was this data collected?
We ran 12 ShortsIntel Research Runs on our own account on 1 November 2026, one niche brief each, up to 50 Videos per Run. Each Video was analysed for its hook type and opening line. One script computed every number on this page from the raw Run results.
