How to research Instagram Reels in your niche
By Jackson Gathondu. Published 1 November 2026. Updated .
Reels research usually means scrolling the Explore tab, saving Reels that look like they did well, and guessing why. You end up with a folder of examples and no idea how they compare with what is normal in the niche.
This guide works through the same research with an Assistant connected to ShortsIntel. You read a Hashtag and a Keyword to see what sits at the top of the niche, check the Creators behind those Reels against their own usual reach, and then run a Research that analyses the top Reels and tells you which hooks, formats and lengths beat the niche median. The Instagram MCP page lists every Instagram tool and how to connect.
Four ways into a niche on Instagram
They answer different questions at different prices, so pick the ones you need before you start.
- Hashtag: what are the most viewed Reels carrying this tag, and what does a typical one get? Use it to size up a community tag.
- Keyword: what does Instagram search show for a phrase people type, limited to the past month? Use it to see what gets views now.
- Creator: is this Reel a hit for this account, or is it what they always get? A Creator lookup compares each recent Reel with that Creator's median views.
- Research: across the top Reels for a niche, which hooks, formats and lengths get more views than the niche median, what do the winners say in their first line, and what are viewers asking for in the comments?
What each step costs
Your Assistant can quote the price of any paid call before running it. Reading a finished Research again is free.
| Step | What you get | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Hashtag lookup | Sampled stats for the tag (median and top views, engagement rate) and its top Reels. | 3 credits |
| Keyword lookup | One page of Instagram search for the phrase from the past month: sampled stats and the top 10 Reels by views. | 3 credits |
| Creator lookup | Follower count, baseline (median views, engagement rate, posts per week) and recent Reels with Scores against that baseline. | 6 credits |
| Reel lookup with analysis | One Reel by link: hook, opening line, on-screen text, format, tone, call to action and transcript. | 23 credits |
| Research | The top Reels for a niche, each analysed, plus a Digest and lift tables comparing hooks, formats and lengths. | 1,036 credits for up to 50 analysed Reels, 20 credits for each one after that. |
Data limits
Instagram data limits
- Instagram Video search and Keyword lookups are best effort. Results come back marked as partial coverage and can miss Reels that Instagram itself would show.
- Hashtag and Keyword stats come from the Reels read in one lookup (10 in the samples below), not from Instagram's own totals.
- Sounds are TikTok only, so there is no Sound lookup or Sound Tracker on Instagram. The score_video tool is TikTok only too. Recent Reels still get Scores through a Creator lookup; Reels older than 30 days carry none.
- Refreshing a Research's Videos is TikTok only. To update an Instagram Research, run a new one.
- Only public data is read: no private accounts, no Stories, nothing behind a login. Analysis covers Videos up to 10 minutes long.
- Ads that run on Instagram come from the Meta Ad Library, not from the Instagram tools.
How to research Reels in a niche
You do all of this in plain language in Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any Assistant connected to ShortsIntel. The Assistant picks the tools.
Pick two or three entry points
Write down the Hashtag your niche uses most and the phrase a buyer would type into Instagram search. For a home fitness product that might be homeworkout and home workout.
Read the Hashtag
Ask your Assistant to look up the Hashtag on Instagram. Note the median views across the sampled Reels: that is the bar a Reel has to clear to stand out. Check the posting dates on the top Reels, because a Hashtag's top Reels can be months old.
Read the Keyword
Ask for the Keyword lookup on the search phrase. It covers the past month, so it shows what is getting views right now. Compare its median with the Hashtag's.
Check the Creators behind the top Reels
For the three or four Reels you would copy, ask the Assistant to look up each Creator. If a Reel's outlier Score is well above 1, it beat that Creator's usual reach and the idea is worth a closer look. If it sits near 1, the account just has a large audience.
Run a Research on the niche
Describe the niche in a sentence and ask for a Research on Instagram only, or on Instagram with TikTok and YouTube Shorts. Ask for the estimate first. A Research takes several minutes and returns a Digest plus lift tables.
Read the lift tables, then the Digest
The lift tables say which hook types, formats and lengths got more views than the niche median and how many Reels each figure rests on. The Digest quotes the winning hooks word for word with templates and lists what viewers are asking for. Ignore any row with only one or two Reels behind it.
Track what you want to keep watching
Set a Tracker on the Hashtag, the Keyword or a competitor Creator so a Change Report tells you when a new Reel takes off.
Sample output from the house account
Real responses from our own account on a home fitness niche, trimmed for length. All three went over the REST API; the MCP tools get_hashtag_or_sound, get_keyword and research call the same operations and return the same objects to your Assistant. Creator names and handles are left out.

(4 low-confidence hook rows, the visual format tables, the Digest and the 46 analysed Reels trimmed)How to read it
The Hashtag and the Keyword give two different bars. The homeworkout sample has a median of about 114K views, but its top three Reels were posted in August 2026, September 2026 and November 2025. The home workout search, limited to the past month, has a median of about 57K. If you are judging a Reel posted this week, the Keyword median is the fairer yardstick.
Check reactions as well as views. The third search result has 224,690 views but 387 likes and no comments, so it reached people without getting much of a reaction. Two other results came back with 0 views. A count Instagram did not report comes back as 0, so read likes and comments on those.
The Research lift tables compare groups of Reels with the niche median. A views lift of 1.36 means Reels of that length got 1.36 times the niche median. In this fitness set, Reels under 15 seconds got 1.36 times the median, and Reels over 30 seconds got 0.63 and 0.56 times, though those longer Reels had higher engagement. Problem hooks, which open on the viewer's mistake, got 1.48 times the median across 11 Reels. Bold claims got 0.09 times across 5. Rows marked low_confidence rest on one or two Reels, so leave them out of any decision.
The Research dropped four of the Reels it picked up as off topic, analysed 46, and came back with status partial and Instagram coverage partial. With 11 or 12 Reels in each length bucket, the length table is still worth reading.
What it costs
The two lookups above cost 3 credits and 3 credits. The Research cost 1,036 credits, and reading it again, including its Digest and every analysed Reel, is free. Questions to ask your Assistant
Paste these into any connected Assistant and swap in your own niche.
- Look up the Hashtag homeworkout on Instagram and tell me the median views and when the top Reels were posted.
- Search Instagram for the phrase home workout and list the top Reels from the past month with their likes and comments.
- Look up the Creators behind the top three Reels and tell me which Reels beat that Creator's usual reach.
- Quote a Research on home fitness Reels on Instagram only, then run it and show me which lengths and hook types beat the median.
- From that Research, give me five hooks I could adapt, quoted word for word, and three questions viewers keep asking in the comments.
- Track the Hashtag homeworkout on Instagram and tell me when a new Reel enters its top 10.
Questions
- How do I research Instagram Reels in my niche?
- Start with the Hashtag your niche uses and the phrase people search for, and note the median views of each. Check the Creators behind the top Reels to see which ones beat their own usual reach. Then run a Research on the niche, which analyses the top Reels and shows which hooks, formats and lengths got more views than the median.
- Can I see Instagram Reels data without logging in to Instagram?
- Yes. ShortsIntel reads public Reels, posts and profiles, so you do not connect your Instagram account. Private accounts and Stories are not available.
- Why do Hashtag and Keyword numbers differ?
- They read different Reels. A Hashtag lookup reads the top Reels carrying the tag, which can be months old. A Keyword lookup reads one page of Instagram search for the phrase from the past month. Both report stats over the Reels they read, not Instagram's totals.
- Can I find trending Instagram Sounds?
- No. Sounds are TikTok only. On Instagram you can research Hashtags, Keywords, Creators and Reels, and run a Research.
- How much does Instagram Reels research cost?
- A Hashtag lookup is 3 credits, a Keyword lookup 3 credits, a Creator lookup 6 credits and a Research 1,036 credits for up to 50 analysed Reels. Reading a finished Research again is free. New accounts get 1,000 credits free, valid for 90 days.
- Can I research Instagram and TikTok together?
- Yes. A Research can cover Instagram Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts in one run. Name the Platforms you want when you ask for it.
